Why isn’t society’s response the same for Pakistan as with the Haiti emergency when NGOs warn that the situation is worse?
8 MILLION PEOPLE URGENTLY NEED HELP. Pakistan is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis in its history. Over a fifth of the country is flooded, 1,600 people are dead and nearly 20 million (12% of the population) are affected by the floods. This a month after the rains began.
The situation is more complicated than in Haiti, when everybody came together and reacted immediately. The truth is help is being neither generous nor quick enough.
A second wave of deaths is now feared due to epidemics, which can easily be transmitted due to the terrible health conditions those affected are living in: no drinking water, no food, no shelter and under contaminated water.
