IV edition of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards

The BBVA Foundation has announced the winners of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards 2011. The awards go to eight researchers and creators of excellence in disciplines ranging from ecology to cooperation, whose work is aimed to tackling the major challenges faced in the 21st Century. The awards, set up in 2008, recognize contributions that have a significant impact based on originality and theoretic significance, as well as their ability to push back the boundaries of knowledge.

BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award – Climate Change

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Climate Change category has been granted in this fourth edition to Isaac Held, an American physicist of German origin, employed at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “for his fundamental and pioneering contributions to our understanding of the structure of atmospheric circulation systems and the role of water vapor – the most important greenhouse gas – in climate change,” in the words of the jury’s citation.
