BBVA is firmly committed to education as leverage for social inclusion. In South America and Mexico the Niños Adelante (Forward, children) program of scholarships for social integration is noteworthy. The aim of this program is to contribute to the social integration of children from underprivileged families in Latin America through support for primary and secondary education. In addition, since 1993 BBVA has been organizing and sponsoring the Ruta Quetzal BBVA, which is an initiative declared to be of cultural interest by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). In Spain, it sponsors the Teacher Action Prize, together with the Fundación de Ayuda contra la Drogadicción (Foundation of Aid against Drug Addiction or FAD) and UNESCO, in order to disseminate the relevant experience and educational projects that promote and develop teachers in educational centers around the country.

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2013 BBVA National Teaching Awards. The awards seek to recognize the excellent work of thousands of teachers across the country who run programs to promote reading and writing among their students.
For yet another year the 2013 Ruta Quetzal BBVA was “a great unforgettable adventure” for the young expeditionaries.
The last few days of Ruta Quetzal BBVA have focused on social entrepreneurship, with courses and workshops being held at leading cultural centers in Panama City. The young participants were able to share the social issues facing their communities, followed by a discussion of their experiences and potential solutions.
In the twenty-eighth edition of Ruta Quetzal BBVA, from the Darien Rainforest to the Europe of Charles V, the young explorers will travel for three weeks through some of the most significant places in Panama to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific by Núñez de Balboa. The youths will then travel to Belgium, where they will visit the European Parliament and study the life of the emperor Charles V and before arriving in Madrid, they will have the opportunity to visit the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. They will later be received by their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, before ending their journey in Extremadura.
BBVA Colombia announced that it would be partnering with the National Reading Plan and launching a new campaign to encourage customers to make donations to the program. BBVA Colombia customers will now be able to make direct contributions to the National Reading and Writing Plan via ATMs. The event was attended by the Minister for Education, María Fernanda Campo; a representative of Fundalectura, Alberto Sanabria, and our Chairman, Óscar Cabrera Izquierdo.
Forum, part of BBVA Group, has been honored by the Chilean government, winning the “Más por Chile” seal of approval. The program was recognized for its support for the country’s most vulnerable groups and their social integration.
In September last year the BBVA Volunteer Office launched the School Debating League project, an initiative that in its first edition succeeded in mobilizing over 1,260 10th-grade students from 24 schools in Valencia. The semifinals of this ‘revolutionary training method’ are already underway.
The ceremony held on April 10 in Madrid was chaired by the BBVA Chairman, Francisco González, and the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, José Ignacio Wert. A total of 129,000 euros are awarded in its eight categories, which cover the various educational levels and areas of knowledge.
